Prince Al Waleed expects Citigroup to halve share in Saudi SAMBA

18/01/2004-Saudi investor Prince Alwaleed was quoted as saying that he expected Citigroup to halve its stake in SAMBA Financial Group to 10 percent within months, Reuters reported.

Prince Alwaleed, a shareholder in both firms, also denied that a change in the bank's name this month from Saudi American Bank was the result of political tension or fears of a boycott by Saudis of U.S. brands.

The name change follows a decision by Citigroup last year to reduce its involvement in SAMBA, Saudi Arabia's second largest listed bank with a market capitalization of SR31.7 billion ($8.45 billion) as of January 15.

Al Waleed said that Citigroup still has a 20 percent stake in the bank, indicating that he expects that it will be reduced to 10 percent within months.
The Prince holds a seven percent stake in SAMBA and a substantial stake in Citigroup.
