Saudi to start bidding
process for 2nd cellular-phone network license
20/01/2004- Saudi Arabia's telecommunications regulator will today publish
details of the pre-qualification process for firms interested in setting up the
oil-rich Kingdom's second cellular-phone network, Dow Jones Newswires reported.
The Communications and Information Technology Commission's documents will draw
up guidelines for companies planning to invest in a new network that will end
Saudi Telecommunications Co.'s (STC) monopoly over mobile-telecom services.
CITC will also start to shortlist bidders interested in licenses for two data-
communication operators, now also under Saudi Telecommunications Co.'s monopoly.
The documents will kick off the pre-qualification process that CITC hopes will
lead to the issuance of a second Global System for Mobile communications, or
GSM, license by the fourth quarter of this year.
Saudi Arabia, with a population in excess of 23 million and cell penetration
rate of 25 percent, has the largest telecom sector of the Arab Gulf states, with
annual growth of 30 percent.
